The central character of many journeys, stories and experiences, Indian taxis are one of the most familiar sights on urban roads.

With its latest category, 'Taxis', pioneering online automobile transactional marketplace, Droom, has ensured a new lease of life to these iconic vehicles by enabling buyers and sellers of used taxis to transact over the platform.

These pre-owned taxis will be available at a starting price range of Rs. 1,00,000, and upwards.

Sandeep Aggarwal-led Automobile marketplace Droom has announced its entry into the electric vehicles segment. The company has reportedly tied up with players like Mahindra, Hero Electric, Okinawa Scooters and Yobykes to offer a wide range of electric vehicles to its users.

Droom, which has been enabling customers to buy and sell new and old automobiles, has entered the category keeping in mind the environmental benefits and the Indian government’s focus on electric vehicles. As a part of the promotional strategy, Droom will be offering 100% cashback on the booking amount for all new bookings of electric vehicles.

Commenting on the announcement, Sandeep Aggarwal, Founder and CEO, Droom said, “The automobile industry in India is on the throes of disruption with the focus on electric vehicles and the increased use of artificial intelligence. The Indian government has announced that it wants only electric vehicles to ply on Indian roads by the year 2030. At Droom, our vision is to be the transaction platform for everything on motor and wheels and make their transactions easy, quick and trustworthy.”

Droom has also announced the price range for electric scooters, which is expected to be from $310 (INR 20K) to $660 (INR 42K). The electric cars are priced in the range of $125K (INR 8 Lakh) to $203K (INR 13 Lakh).

The Indian Government has been actively working on providing the right infrastructure for electric vehicles. It has also rolled out favorable schemes like 12% GST on electric vehicles, in comparison to 28% on petrol and diesel vehicles. The government has also launched a number of initiatives to expedite the adoption of electric vehicles like the FAME Scheme (Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric Vehicles), which is a programme that promises incentives to EV manufacturers and buyers.

A Look At Droom And The Online Automobile Marketplace Sector

Founded in 2014, Droom is an online automobile marketplace that offers a wide range of categories from bicycle to planes. Additionally, it provides other automobile services such as warranty, RSA, insurance and auto loan. Droom uses advanced technologies like de-facto pricing standard, full circle trust score, among others.

The company claims to have a market share of 65% in the automobile marketplace category. It has so far raised close to $65 Mn (INR 417 Cr) in five rounds of funding. Droom is headquartered in Gurugram, India with a team size of more than 270 people.

As stated by Sandeep in July, The company is currently planning for expansion in Southeast Asia and is also looking to get registered on NASDAQ by 2019.

The company claims to have a GMV of $650 Mn and has a presence in more than 500 cities across the country. It helps automobile dealers to increase their consumer base and provides them with vehicle checks using its advanced data science algorithms. It charges an annual subscription to dealers and is also looking to earn revenue by introducing automobile credit, which will be provided to the consumers.

The startup is also planning to monetise its Orange Book Value feature, which gives the fair price of bikes and cars in the country. Other features like auto inspection will also be rolled out for dealers.

A report by Mahindra First Choice says that the used cars market currently stands at 3.5 Mn units and is expected to grow to 7 Mn units by 2020. Only 12% of the used car marketplace sector is organised, which explains the massive growth potential in the segment. The market is growing at the rate of 15% a year.

With Droom announcing its entry into the electric vehicle segment, in the backdrop of the government’s efforts to bolster its “all Electric Mission” by 2030, the online automobile marketplace industry is slowly gearing up to ride the rising EV wave in the country.

Online marketplace for used cars Droom has extended its fair price value assessment tool, Orange Book Value for used mobile phones. ‘OBV for Mobile’ uses artificial intelligence to analyse the make, model and condition of a mobile phone before arriving at a fair price value for the same.

Currently in pilot mode, the service is available across all 500 cities where Droom has presence. Droom claims the orange book value service contributes almost 30% of its traffic generating over 10 million from its overall traffic of 31.2 million visitors.

For the mobile phone segment, the service will be moetised through a licensing model as also on the basis of lead generation. “We intend to license our technology to large horizontal ecommerce players who can then offer it to their buyers and sellers and also mobile OEMs and other resellers. Besides, we have a lead generation where large resellers can use ‘OBV for Mobile’ for leads and pay us on a per-lead basis,” said Sandeep Aggarwal, Founder and CEO of Droom.

While Droom did not share details of the new service’s contribution to volumes or revenues, Aggarwal expects that the mobile segment will contribute upto 5% of the company’s revenues over the next 1 year.

Droom claims to have an annualized gross merchandise value of Rs 3,756 crore with an annual growth rate of 225%. Droom is targeting net profitability by 2018 end.

Droom's 'OBV for Mobile' feature analyses mobile phones based on their make, model, age, condition, and accessories, besides many other factors, to come up with a fair, unbiased, and independent market value for a used phone.

While various reports by Gartner and Deloitte have projected that the used smartphone market will touch around Rs 60,000 crore by 2021, the organized market commands only 8% share. As per the reports, around seven crore smartphones will be discarded by users in 2017 who would upgrade to new models and the second-hand market, growing at 35% year-on-year, will reach a size of 13 crore phones by 2021.

Goel, who prefers to base his R&D operations in Jaipur even though InstaCash is headquartered in Gurgaon, has already rolled out its operations in Delhi and NCR region and buys about 2500 phones a month with a 70% month-on-month growth. But he said they would introduce the product officially in Jaipur.

“While leading e-commerce giants are present in the market through their exchange programmes, the seller never has an opportunity to value the price of his/her phone in an objective and transparent manner. That’s where InstaCash fills a huge gap. Secondly, the price InstaCash offers is about 1.3 times higher than what the online platforms give,” said Goel, founder of the startup.

Explaining about the app, Goel said InstaCash is a technological break-through for used smartphones like Droom in the second-hand car segment which uses a scientific diagnostic system to discover the price of a phone. “You just need to run the app on your phone and in 60 seconds, you get the value of your phone,” he said.

Delhi-based Cashify is the only other player to provide such a price discovery mechanism in the country where the smartphone penetration is about 37% out of an user base of approximately 100 crore. However, with internet becoming cheaper, focus on digital currency, and the urge of the people to upgrade to new versions are expected to galvanize the second-hand market.

“Smartphones penetration is rapidly rising not only because internet has become cheaper but also they provide host of useful functionalities. That’s why the feature phone users will buy either low-cost smartphones from companies like Jio or Airtel, or they would go for secondhand market,” added Goel.

InstaCash is also planning to partner with organized retail players like Reliance Digital, Go Mobile, Spice Hotspot, Sangeetha Mobiles, Vijay Sales, Sargam India Electronics, The Mobile Store and is already in talks with some of them to increase its footprint in 400 stores in the country. While InstaCash has not raised any money so far, Goel said they are looking to raise at least Rs 3-6 crore to expand the operations.

“We don’t need money to scale up gradually as we already have advance money deposited with us by the vendors who buy these phones and sell them after refurbishing. But for aggressive expansion, we need funds,” added Goel.

A serial entrepreneur, Goel, along with other promoters, had sold their previous venture Teramatrix to Sillicon Valley’s Internet of Things (IoT) startup Globetouch in March this year. Their first venture Codescape was acquired by Shyam group in 2011.

Planning to sell your smartphone? Soon you would be able to find its apt price and list online for sale in real time!

Gurgaon based startup Droom is developing a third party app which when downloaded will determine whether your phone's camera, sensors, screen, Bluetooth buttons are working properly. It will also give an instant valuation range for smartphones within a few seconds through an app.

The app when fired will determine the model, age and brand of the mobile phone in real time. "We plan to license our technology to large horizontal ecommerce players who can then offer it to their buyers and sellers," said company CEO Sandeep Aggarwal tells Moneycontrol on the sidelines of GES 2017.

Droom already offers instant price discovery for a used vehicle on its website under its valuation service called Orange Book Value.

The technology is likely to be an extension of OBV. It will be the first time any company will be offering a service to discover price of a used mobile phone and instantly list on a marketplace platform.

Founded in 2014 by former Shopclues CEO Sandeep Aggarwal, Droom has so far raised close to USD 65 million from investors such as Digital Garage, Beenext, Beenos, Lightbox Ventures and Axis Capital Partners

According to the company, data collected from the 100 million queries received for OBV revealed certain interesting results. The two-wheeler category surpassed the four-wheeler category in terms of queries generated. With income rising rapidly and the price of a motorbike being relatively less, first-time buyers with no or small familial responsibilities generally opt for the same. Furthermore, youngsters are attracted to the latest bikes with a high-price range, hence they look to buy used versions of the same in a perfect working condition.

The top two-wheeler brands searched included Hero, Suzuki and Yamaha, with Honda topping the charts.

As for four-wheelers, the top brands searched were Maruti Suzuki, Honda, Mahindra and Hyundai. A major chunk of OBV’s users reside in metropolitan cities such as Bengaluru, which tops the charts of highest traction of OBV city wise. Following Bengaluru are Delhi, Mumbai and Chennai.

Online automobile marketplace Droom has seen a rise in car owners adopting its algorithm benchmark pricing engine, the Orange Book Value (OBV), to determine pricing of their vehicles. Droom launched the online tool last year with an aim to reduce the hassle of selling a vehicle or buying a pre-owned one.

According to a survey, nearly 77 percent respondents said that they rely solely on OBV to determine the pricing of their vehicles, up from 50 percent prior to the launch. In addition, about 97 percent of customers now price their vehicles within the OBV range, reflecting the confidence in the pricing engine, the Gurgaon-based company said in a release quoting the survey results.

The survey also revealed that nearly 42 percent of the respondents used OBV multiple times in a week.

Droom’s online tool has already generated 95 million queries since launch, according to founder and CEO, Sandeep Aggarwal. The company says it has seen over 10,000 automotive dealers across India adopting it, and it has used around 50,000 transactions worth approximately Rs 1,000 crore to validate OBV pricing.

In addition to cars, OBV also covers motorcycles, scooters, bicycles and planes. Users can also access the tool via a mobile application available for download on Android and iOS.
